Tennōji Zoo - by しげくん on Google

Description
Tennōji Zoo is spread over 11ha in Osaka's Tennōji Park. It is one of Japan's oldest zoos and home to about 1,000 animals from 180 species. Among them many are from African Savanna style of habitat (lion, hyena, zebra, rhino, eland, etc.) or from the Asian Tropical Rainforest. There is also a reptile house and an aviary.
Access & Transport
The zoo is located in the Tennoji ward, 2km southeast of Namba station. The Tennōji tain and metro station (incl. Midosuji and Tanimachi lines) is right by the Tenshiba gate, at the southeast corner of the park and the Shinsekai Gate (western side) is equidistant (3mins walk) from the Ebisucho Station (Hankaidenki-Hankai tram and Sakaisuji metro lines) and Dobutsuen-Mae Station. There are some parking spaces within Tennoji Park.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the Shinsekai neighbourhood, including possibly the Tsutenkaku Tower and the Shitennō temple
Environmental & Social
Not much info relating to conservation efforts and enclosures appear to be small on average.
Conclusion
Tennōji Zoo makes for a good alternative away from cultural attractions or shopping, especially for families with younger children, but the zoo is a little behind the time by international standards and needs to up its game in terms of enclosure and conservation pedigree before we can recommend it. At the moment it sits squarely as an attraction aimed at local or regional residents.
