Tsutenkaku Tower

, Osaka, Osaka

Description

Tsūtenkaku is a 103m tall tower located in the south of Osaka that is famous for its LED lighting at night. It has commercial decks around 18-26m above ground and observation decks between 84m and 95m. Trivia: the lights on top of the tower are a weather beacon indicating the next day's weather forecast

Access & Transport

The tower is located in the Shinsekai district, 2km southeast of Namba station. The Ebisucho Station (Hankaidenki-Hankai tram and Sakaisuji metro lines) is only 200m away and Dobutsuen-Mae Station (Midosuji and Sakaisuji lines) is 500m away with the tram station of Shin-Imamiya-Ekimae (ankaidenki-Hankai line) and JR Shin-Imamiya train station both next to it.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the Shinsekai neighbourhood and the Tennōji Zoo

Meta review

A well-known city landmark for the past decades that still finds its way into many travel guides. Interestingly, most online reviews are about how cool it looks at night and the lively touristy and commercial neighbourhood that surrounds it with many eateries, restaurants, gifts and souvenir shops. The various decks seem to lack some kind of logical flow but some have interesting or at least entertaining content and the views are good without being anything to write home about.

Environmental & Social

Quite energy intensive on a per person basis. LED lights are used

Conclusion

Tsutenkaku can still be considered a city landmark but no longer an icon. Provided you have a bit of extra time and are in an urban exploration mood, it is definitely worth checking out the surrounding Shinsekai area around sunset time so you can have dinner there and enjoy the distinctive silhouette of the tower when lit up. If you have already been up one of the observation decks elsewhere in the city you can pass on this one.
