Azpeitia Railway Museum - by Kiko Vilarino on Google
Description
The Basque Railway Museum (Museo Vasco del Ferrocarril) is housed in the former railway station of Azpeitia. It has a collection of steam, diesel and electric locomotives, rolling socks and trams. There is also a complete collection of machine tools and a display of uniforms. In addition, the museum operates rides aboard a train pulled by a steam locomotive along the former Urola railway line.
Access & Transport
The museum is a 2mins walk from the centre of Azpeitia. There is a street parking around and a bus stop right next to the old station. Azpeitia is 40km west of San Sebastian and 20km north of Zumarraga, the closest train station. From San Sebastian by car, take the AP-8 expressway and after 26km exit 48 onto GI-631 until Azpeitia
Instructions & Recommendations
The steam train rides take place from Easter until end of October on Saturdays at 12h00 and 17h30 and on Sundays and PHs at 12h00. We suggest combining this activity with the Loyola Sanctuary, a 10min drive away.
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of an existing infrastructure with low carbon footprint, so we deem this attraction environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's technical heritage and brings a bit of economic activity to the town.
Conclusion
This regional railway museum has a wide enough range of exhibits and cheap entrance fees so it should not be reserved to train buffs and worth visiting for anybody passing through the area with a curious mind and/or an engineering streak.
