Urkiola hike to Anboto - by Vero Fernandez on Alltrails
Description
The Urkiola Natural Park is located roughly between Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Spanish Basque Country. The landscape consists of limestone peaks dominated by Anboto (highest summit 1,337m), shrubs, beech and pine forests. The 10km loop reviewed here leaves from Urkiola to reach the top of Anboto and returns through Urtegi Zaharra and Pol-Pol Iturria. The cumulative ascent is 740m and the section near the summit is a little technical, making this route suitable for hikers with a minimum of experience and decent base fitness.
Access & Transport
The trailhead is next to Urkiola Sanctuary (Urkiolako Santutegia), 200m off the BI-263 road. There are parking spaces. Urkiola is 11km south of Durango, 40km southeast of Bilbao, and 30km north of Vitoria.
Instructions & Recommendations
Make sure to bring proper footwear, some snacks (and possibly a picnic), plenty of water, sun protection and rain/wind coat depending on the weather forecast. Cloudy doesn't mean the UVs won't get to you.
Environmental & Social
Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the villages in the area
Conclusion
A pretty short hike with good views that will be best enjoyed by those seeking to discover the region in-depth. Not worth a long-range drive but can easily be included on the way between Vitoria and Bilbao (or San Sebastian).
Key positive
Good views over the central part of the Pais Vasco
Key negative
Not much else around
Suitability
Best for those aged between 8 and 70 and with an intermediate level of fitness
