Cristo Del Otero

Description

The Cristo del Otero (Christ of the Knoll) is a 21m tall sculpture of Jesus Christ in the outskirts of Palencia, Spain. It was designed by Spanish sculptor Victorio Macho in 1931 in a style mixing Cubist and Art Deco elements. The sculpture is complemented by an Interpretation Center and a small museum on the life and works of the sculptor.

Access & Transport

The monument is 3km north of the centre of Palencia. There are very few parking spaces next to it so best to park a little before. The town itself is 50km north of Valladolid (30mins train ride) and 140km southeast of León (70mins train ride).

Instructions & Recommendations

The Interpretation Center is closed on Mondays and at lunch time

Meta review

The icon of Palencia, the sculpture gets mostly positive comments and so do the views from the top. However, there are also recurring observations about the surrounding area being dirty and the road up to the monument narrow, with limited space to park, so that walking the last stretch is the best way to get there. Finally, visitors seem to enjoy the small museum dedicated to V. Macho

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint.

Conclusion

Not worth a detour in our opinion but definitely go and take a look if you happen to be in Palencia. It is a 21m high sculpture and that's about it.
