Citadel of Pamplona - by Turismo de Navarra
Description
The Citadel of Pamplona is a military fort constructed from the late 16th century to the mid-17th century that is today used as a public park and for cultural events. The enclosure is shaped as a five-pointed star reinforced by half-moons, in the 'Vauban style". Surviving buildings include the artillery room, the ammunition dump, and a warehouse.
Access & Transport
The ciudadela is at the southwestern edge of the historic center of Pamplona with the main entrance located along Avenida del Ejército. Several bus services stop there (L08, L10, L15, L18)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with Plaza del Castillo or a visit to the Plaza de Toros (bullfighting ring)
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint, serves as a park for residents and preserves the city's architectural and historical heritages
Conclusion
The Ciudadela is one of the main sights in Pamplona and should be on the shortlist of a first-time visitor to the town. However, we feel there is untapped potential in the structure and don't think it warrants a special trip from elsewhere in Navarra.
Key positive
Preserved structure
Repurposed as a park and no admission fees
Key negative
Lacks content
Suitability
Partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
