Description
The bullring of Pamplona (Plaza de Toros) is one of the largest in the world (19,000+ capacity) and is best known for the San Fermin Feria that takes place early July every year; the bull run (encierro) finishes there. The complex is open to visitors several months a year, providing access to the arena, various sections of the building, and several exhibits (video and bullfighting memorabilia).
Access & Transport
The Plaza de Toros is in the centre of town, a mere 300m from the Plaza del Castillo. Bus services L03 and L06 stop next to the building
Instructions & Recommendations
Check the schedule online as they change every year and we are unable to replicate exactly their calendar in the practical info section. There are several guided visits every day at fixed times. These can be booked online. Regular visits are inclusive of an audio-guide.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Socially - a huge negative (bullfighting concept) mixed with a bit of positive (the cultural aspect)
Conclusion
Another attraction with animal welfare issues that makes what would otherwise be a culturally interesting visit a difficult one to recommend without a strong caveat. If only it was documenting bullfighting as a tradition belonging to the past...
Key positive
Impressive arena
Good background info on the Feria
Key negative
Does not fare well on ethical aspects
Suitability
Not recommended for younger children and those who care about animal rights / cruelty. Website states the visit is wheelchair accessible
