Description
Plaza del Castillo marks the heart of the historical center of Pamplona. It is named after the castle that once stood next to it, the square then acting as the parade ground. The main features are the central bandstand, the old Casino building, and one façade of the Palace of Navarra.
Access & Transport
The square is in the center of town, walking distance from most other sights. The closest bus stop is next to the Monument to the Fueros (L03, L08, L10). Pamplona is 80km southeast of San Sebastian (70mins drive) and 175km northwest of Zaragoza (2h drive or by train).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the historical centre, including the Cathedral and perhaps the Plaza de Toros, both a 5 mins' walk away.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally, it lacks green spaces and mostly consists of commercial activities. Part of the town's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
A nice provincial "plaza mayor" with a dash of history and some enjoyable cafes but nothing truly exceptional because of a lack of architectural harmony. Probably the obvious place to start an exploration of Pamplona, or end the day with a drink
