Cheese & wine tasting in Paris (Paroles de Fromagers)

41 Rue du Faubourg du Temple, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

Paroles de Fromagers is a team of cheesemakers with 2 shops in Paris, one of which also houses cheesemaking workshops and tastings. This review covers the 90 mins cheese and wine tasting (delivered in English) during which customers will get to taste 7 aged cheeses from their 17th century cheese cellar paired with 3 different wines.

Access & Transport

The closest métro station is Goncourt (11), a mere 150m away and République (3, 5, 8, 9, 11) a 4mins walk away. Bus stops along rue du Faubourg du Temple and Quai de Jemmapes (along the Canal Saint Martin) are also convenient options.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please note that they are not allowed to serve alcohol to customers aged under 18yrs old. A children price is available on the website, but the minimum age is not stated. Do not plan to eat a lot before or after the tasting. The tasting takes place most days from Tuesday to Saturday at 16h30 but best to check the website ahead of time for exact dates and availability. This activity is best combined with a digestive walk along the Canal Saint Martin.

Meta review

The reviews for the tasting class are overall extremely positive, reviewers highlight the friendliness and knowledge of the cheesemakers and, of course, enjoy both the cheese and wine being served. There are a few mixed comments that mostly point out to the disappointing portions and high price for what they learned and tasted.

Environmental & Social

Socially positive as it helps small independent operators and customers get to enjoy quality products.

Conclusion

In our opinion, the cheese and wine tasting by Paroles de Fromager is a great initiation for anybody with little experience of French cheese. It is one of the best ways to understand and appreciate the differences and importance of affinage Vs mass market products found in most supermarkets worldwide. For those who need no introduction however, the better option is to buy some cheese and wine there and enjoy it elsewhere.

Key positive

Inviting cheese shop

Knowledgeable fromagers who can convey their love for their craft and products

Key negative

Poor value for those who are already knowledgeable with French aged cheese and wine pairing

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but those under 18 cannot taste wine so would recommend it to adults mostly. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.
