Description
The Tuileries Garden (Jardin des Tuileries) was originally the garden of the Tuileries Palace (the Parisian residence of French monarchs until it was burned by the Paris Commune in 1871) but was opened to the public in the 17th century. There are two museums on the northwest and southwest corners: the Orangerie known for its impressionist painting and sculptures by Rodin and the Jeu de Paume that displays contemporary art. The garden is located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde with rue de Rivoli running its northern perimeter. The Place de la Concorde is the largest square in Paris and marks the eastern edge of the Champs-Élysées. It was the site of many executions during the French Revolution. The key structures on the square are the 2 fountains representing the rivers and the seas and the Obelisk of Luxor standing between them. The 3,300 old Oblisk was a diplomatic gift from Egypt to France is 1829; it is made of yellow granite, is 23m high and weights 250t.
Access & Transport
Place de la Concorde has its own métro station named Concorde (1, 8, 12) and can also be accessed with a short walk from Madeleine (8, 12, 14). The garden is also best accessed from Concorde with Tuileries station (1) along rue de Rivoli a good option.
Instructions & Recommendations
The gardens are open from early morning to dusk. They are fantastically located for a break after walking the Champs-Élysées or visiting the Louvre Museum. Ideally, try to pick a sunny day and spend some time lounging next to the Bassin Octogonal or in the shade of the trees. Besides the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées, this activity is best combined with the Madeleine church and the Place Vendôme neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
We deem these attractions to be marginally negative from an environmental standpoint, despite the gardens, based on the use of water and electricity. Socially neutral
Conclusion
The Place de la Concorde has an interesting history and is a beautiful place for pictures - true, there really isn't anything to do, but visitors to the city should make a point to drive or walk past it. It is located right next to the Tuileries Gardens which we would recommend to anybody planning to visit the Louvre Museum as well if the weather is stable. It is not the most beautiful park in the city, but its location is unparalleled.
