Description
The Marais is an historic district of Paris spanning parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, starting from around the Centre Pompidou (west) until the Place des Vosges (east). Historically it was the city's aristocratic district, its development was primed by the building of the fortified church by the Order of the Temple (the Knight Templars) and until the 17th century many noble families built their urban residences there - called Hôtels particuliers in French. Some of the famous ones include the Hôtel de Sens, the Hôtel de Sully, the Hôtel de Beauvais and the Hôtel de Salé which houses the Picasso Museum. After the French Revolution of the late 18th century, the district saw a shift towards commercial activities and a more popular demography, including the development of a Jewish community after the end of the 19th century. It is also one of the centre of Paris' LGBT community.
Access & Transport
Walking or bus are two excellent options if you are already in the city centre, there are regular stops along Rue Rambuteau / Rue des Francs Bourgeois ad Rue Rivoli (both traversing the district in an east-west direction). The métro Saint Paul (1), Hôtel de Ville (1, 11) and Rambuteau (11) are also very convenient options
Instructions & Recommendations
The district is best enjoyed from mid-day onward when the stores and restaurants are open until late into the night - it is one of the best places for nightlife. In terms of sightseeing, make sure you include Place des Vosges on your visit and possibly the Picasso Museum. From there, it is a short walk to Île Saint-Louis or the Centre Pompidou.
Environmental & Social
Very urban environment. Socially, it has been the center of the city's LGBT community and has therefore always flown the flag of diversity. Several ethnic groups also reside in the area.
Conclusion
Although it is becoming a victim of its own success, Le Marais is one of most enjoyable places to spend an afternoon or evening/night in Paris. There is everything in one place: history and architecture mixed with boutiques and bars/restaurants.
