Luxembourg Gardens, Paris

Rue de Vaugirard, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Luxembourg Garden (Jardins du Luxembourg) is located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, next to the Luxembourg Palace which houses the French Senate. It covers 23ha and is known for its lawns and tree-lined promenades, its many sculptures (including French queens and illustrious women) as well as 2 water features: the octogonal Grand Bassin and the Medicis Fountain (in the northeaster corner). The garden itself was named after the hill upon which it is located (Mons Lucotitius).

Access & Transport

There are many buses stops around the garden, along Bd Saint Michel and rue de Vaugirard but the fastest way to get there for most will be via the RER B that stops at Luxembourg station, along the eastern perimeter of the garden.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please note that the opening and closing hours in this review are approximates are there are too many seasonal variations - exact timing can be found on the Senate website at the following link: https://jardin.senat.fr/en/practical-information/opening-hours.html We would recommend visitors to enjoy the Garden by taking a break there, weather permitting. Activities that can easily be reached from there include Montparnasse Tower (with its observation deck), the Panthéon and the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood.

Meta review

This is probably the highest rated park in the city by reviewers and it occasionally makes it into travel magazines as well. Visitors enjoy the peaceful environment, well maintained lawns and the Medici Fountain in particular. There are some slightly random average reviews from people who find the park boring or too polished (i.e. peaceful and well maintained...).

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Positive for local residents as well

Conclusion

The Luxembourg Garden might just be the most elegant park in the city, with all the sculptures, lines of tree and the majestic Luxembourg Palace. If you are in the 5th or 6th arrondissement it is clearly worth a special detour - if not then make sure it is on your list next time you are in the city and that you schedule some sun that day.
