Marché les Enfants Rouges, Paris

39 Rue de Bretagne, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Marché des Enfants Rouges is the oldest covered market in Paris. It was established in the early 17th century and is now classified as an historical monument. The market was named after the nearby orphanage where kids were clothed in red, the colour of charity. Visitors can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, bread and flowers. There are also restaurants selling cooked meals.

Access & Transport

The market is located at 39 Rue de Bretagne in the 3rd arrondissement. There are 4 métro stations within a 5mins walk: Filles du Calvaire (8), Oberkampf (5, 9), Temple (3) and République (3, 5, 8, 9, 11).

Instructions & Recommendations

It is a good idea to visit if you are planning to stock up your fridge or at lunch time and use the opportunity to eat in one of the restaurants. From there, it is a short walk to Canal Saint Martin or Le Marais neighbourhood.

Meta review

The reviews for the market are quite mixed: most visitors seem happy with the experience and the wide range of cuisines that can be found there but there are recurring comments that this is hardly a market anymore, mostly restaurants - few of which do offer French cuisine. There also seem to be some issues with the table system so some customers are unable to seat anywhere.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Socially positive as it promotes small operators and stall owners and keeps some economic vitality in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Conclusion

The Marché des Enfants Rouges is a good option if you stay in the neighbourhood and looking for some fresh fruits or if you want to have a choice of various international cuisines under one roof. The business model seems to have changed from traditional fresh product stalls towards an increasing number of cooked food stalls with their counter and allocated seats so, if you are looking for the real market experience, there are better options in Paris.
