Moulin Rouge show

82 Boulevard de Clichy, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Moulin Rouge is one of Paris best known cabarets. It is the birthplace of the can-can dance (known internationally as the French can-can) and recognizable by the red windmill on its roof ("moulin rouge" means "red windmill"). Inside, the atmosphere inside is still distinctively Belle Époque. The musical dance shows can be attended at separate times of the evening (there are also some matinées options): 19h00 that includes an elegant dinner with several menu options, 21h00 and 23h00. The prices and timing shown in this review are for the 21h00 show (w/o drinks).

Access & Transport

The cabaret is located along Bd de Clichy, right next to the Blanche (2) métro station. There is also a bus stop close by.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please take note that formal attire is required, and jacket and tie are encouraged. No shorts, bermudas and sport shoes are allowed. The minimum age for kids is 6 and they must be accompanied by an adult. A show at 21h00 can be combined with an evening visit of the Montmartre neighbourhood and dinner and drinks in one of the many restaurants there.

Meta review

Some customers have high expectations and share in reviews that they have been slightly disappointed by the quality of the performances - this did not seem to be a problem for those who did not know what to expect and have little reference in terms of dancing. Otherwise, pretty much everybody enjoys the costume and atmosphere. The main negative complaint is that service is rushed, tables are very close to each other and some seating positions can be awkward / uncomfortable after a while.

Environmental & Social

We have no data around energy efficiency, but this uses a fair amount of electricity (lights, ventilation, etc.) on a per person basis. Socially & Community wise, we deem this activity slightly negative.

Conclusion

As one of the most celebrated cabarets in town - and one of the first of its kind really - it is tempting to include a show there in one's itinerary. We would not recommend it for families but if you have the budget and you think you might like it then you should consider this or one of the other cabaret options such as the Lido or Crazy Horse, depending on where you are staying, price and availability.

Key positive

Enjoyable show with some history attached to it

Something original - a change from historical buildings and museums

Key negative

Expensive

Not everybody will feel comfortable in the Pigalle area at night

Suitability

Officially suitable for children over 6 years old but we don't think anybody under 15 yrs. old would really enjoy the show. Accessible to customers with reduced mobility (private lift can be used instead of stairs)
