BOOK ACTIVITY

Musee d'Orsay, Paris

1 Rue de la Légion d'Honneur, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Musée d'Orsay houses the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings in the world from artists including Monet, Degas, Manet, Morisot, Renoir, Cézanne, Sisley, Van Gogh, and Seurat. It is one of the most visited art museums in the world. The museum is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station build at the end of the 19th century, on the left bank of the Seine across from the Tuileries Garden and close to the National Assembly.

Access & Transport

The museum is best accessed by train (Musée d'Orsay station on RER C line) and metro (Solférino station on line 12). There are also bus services covering the neighbourhood. The 2 closest parkings are Carrousel du Louvre and Bac Montalembert for those electing to drive.

Instructions & Recommendations

There is a lot to see so plan on staying 2-3h depending on your interests. We would not recommend trying to visit the Louvre on the same day so geographically this activity is best combined with a walk towards Les Invalides or towards the 6th arrondissement and St Germain des Prés

Meta review

The museum is increasingly famous with travel magazines, as if they slowly woke up to the fact that there is not just The Louvre in Paris. Among reviewers, there are proportionally hardly any negative comments - visitors simply love the building and the impressive collection of impressionist paintings, often being face to face with the originals of their favourite masterpieces.

Environmental & Social

The building has state of the art heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (improvements carried out in the early 2010s). We have no additional data on the environmental side. Slightly positive from a social aspect as it helps spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Musée d'Orsay is an easy activity to analyse: the best collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings in the world, bar none. And this, in a beautifully designed Beaux-Arts building. In fact, we would go as far as recommending a visit even to those who usually show little interest in arts generally and paintings in particular.
