Musée du Quai Branly, Paris

37 Quai Branly, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac features indigenous arts and cultures of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. The collection contains over one million objects (a mix of items brought back by French explorers and ethnologists, and from acquisitions) but only a fraction is displayed at any point in time. It was designed by architect Jean Nouvel and named after the French President who brought it to completion.

Access & Transport

The museum is located on the left bank of the Seine, near the Eiffel Tower and the Pont d'Alma. The closest train and metro stations are Pont de l'Alma (RER C) 200m away and Alma Marceau, just across Alma bridge, respectively. The nearest bus stop is on Quai Branly which is the best access road when driving. Parking is available next to the Museum at 25 Quai Branly.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with a visit of the Eiffel Tower and/or a cruise on the Seine.

Meta review

Reviews for the museum are by and large very positive with visitors enjoying the variety of the collection and the building itself (design and layout). The main negative comments are about the lighting (too dim) and from those who have little interest in the type of arts the museum focuses on.

Environmental & Social

With a massive garden (15,000 plants from 150 species), a green wall, use of LEDs and use of European farmed wood, the building scores well in terms of environmental rating. Positive social impact by helping to preserve and promote indigenous arts although the acquisition context of some items was questionable at times.

Conclusion

The Museum du Quai Branly is a great cultural activity that does not overlap with the more classical and better-known museums; as such it complements nicely Le Louvre or Musee d'Orsay. Whether or not it should be on your agenda depends on how much time you have and your interest in non-European / Mediterranean arts.
