Description
The Parc des Buttes Chaumont is a public park in the north-eastern part of Paris (19th arr.), it covers an area of 25ha. It was built under Napoléon III in the 1860s and was a complete reconversion of the area. The most famous features are the Temple de la Sibylle, standing atop a cliff fifty meters above the water of the artificial lake and the 63m long suspension bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel. There are nearly 50 species of plants, trees and shrubs cultivated in the park as well as 2 guignols theatres dating from 1892. In the 19th century, this was a gypsum and limestone quarry and hydraulic pumps had to be installed to bring the water from the canal of the Ourcq River to the top and create a waterfall. The temple is inspired by the Roman Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy
Access & Transport
The Buttes Chaumont (7B) and Botzaris (7B) métro stations are both in/next to the parc and there are also bus stops along Rue Manin and Rue Botzaris on the northern and southern edges, respectively.
Instructions & Recommendations
Try to pick a sunny day and plan to stay 1h to 2h depending on whether you are planning to lie down or sitting for a while! Geographically, it is quite easy to walk to the Parc de la Villette and the City of Sciences & the Industry from there or to the Canal Saint Martin around Jaurès métro station.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Improves the living environment of the community.
Conclusion
The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is a small green oasis in the north-eastern part of Paris. Had it been more central it would be much more fashionable for tourists. Residents probably prefer it that way. We would recommend a visit there for those staying in that area or who have already been to Paris a few times and seen the main sights.
Key positive
Very scenic, in particular the temple and waterfall
Not as crowded as other parks closer to the city centre
Key negative
Not close to the main tourist neighbourhoods
Quaint but lacks the large area of Bois de Vincennes or Bois de Boulogne
Suitability
Mostly accessible for wheelchair users but best to be accompanied as some of the surfaces are uneven and there are some slopes.
