Place et Jardins du Trocadero, Paris

Place du Trocadéro et du 11 Novembre, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Trocadero consists of 3 areas: the square, the esplanade and the gardens. It is in the 16th arrondissement, up a small hill directly across the Seine from the Champs de Mars from where visitors can get some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in the city. The place was named in honour of the Battle of Trocadero (in Spain in 1823) and the Palais de Chaillot was laid on the esplanade - it now houses the Cite de l'architecture et du Patrimoine, the National Naval Museum and the Musée de l'Homme. The Aquarium de Paris can be found in the gardens area.

Access & Transport

The Trocadero metro station (lines 6 and 9) is by far the best way to get there alongside the bus: there are 6 avenues leading to the Place du Trocadero and 2 more between the gardens and the Seine river.

Instructions & Recommendations

There are no gates, so the area is open 24h a day. We would recommend using it as an approach to the Eiffel Tower and visit one of the several museums located there. Besides the Eiffel Tower, it makes sense to combine a visit there with a sightseeing or lunch cruise on one of the bateaux mouches operators. The Quai Branly Museum is also a good option.

Meta review

Le Trocadero gets positive comments from reviewers mostly on account of its splendid views of the Eiffel Tower, by day and night. Recurring complaints are mostly about the crowds and the presence of street vendors and pickpockets.

Environmental & Social

The main energy consumption is for the water fountains, otherwise we deem this activity to be environmentally neutral. Socially neutral.

Conclusion

The Trocadero Esplanade and Gardens are a great stop on a walking tour of Paris, between the Eiffel Tower and the Bois de Boulogne or Arc de Triomphe. We would recommend it if the area is not too crowded but otherwise do not worry, good pictures of the Eiffel Tower can be taken elsewhere.
