Place Vendôme & Saint Honoré, Paris

Place Vendôme, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Place Vendôme is one of the most famous squares in the city, it is located north of the Tuileries Gardens and east of the Madeleine Church. It is octogonal in shape, with hôtels particuliers surrounding a 42m high column with a statue of Napoleon at the top. The column itself has a long history, in particular the statue crowning it that changed multiple times over 200 years since it was completed in 1810 to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz. It is modelled after the Trajan's Column in Rome. The neighbourhood is famous for its many jewellery and watchmaker stores and, together with rue Saint Honoré, is one of the most expensive retail and residential address - the rue de la Paix (last property on the French Monopoly) connects the square with the Place de l'Opéra.

Access & Transport

The neighbourhood and square are best accessed from one of the four following métro stations: Madeleine (8, 12, 14), Opéra (3, 7, 8), Pyramides (7, 14) or Tuileries (1).

Instructions & Recommendations

Stores mostly open around 10h00 or 11h00 (later or closed on Sundays) so best to go from lunch time until early evening. This activity is best combined with a visit of the Madeleine church, the Opéra Garnier, the Tuileries Garden or the Louvre Museum.

Meta review

Most reviewers enjoy strolling the neighbourhood and the history behind the square and the column. For a small minority, there is nothing to do and see - go figure!

Environmental & Social

Environmentally, there is no data at the neighbourhood level, but it is mostly concrete with no green spaces. From a social perspective, it has always been a very exclusive area so the cost-of-living issue doesn't have any meaningful impact on the community

Conclusion

Whether or not you can afford to shop there, the area has fantastic buildings and architecture as well as some interesting history. Also, it is so central that you are bound to go through or near the neighbourhood if you discover the city on foot.

Key positive

Nice buildings architecture and background history of the Place Vendôme

Very centrally located and easy to get to / walk to

Great shopping area for those with huge financial resources

Key negative

Does not deserve a long visit for non-shoppers

Suitability

Accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility depends on each store - the pavements and road crossing should not be problematic.
