Rodin Museum, Paris

77 Rue de Varenne, Paris, Île-de-France

Description

The Musée Rodin is a museum primarily dedicated to the works of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It includes sculptures, drawings, old photographs, and other art items, including paintings - those were donated to the French state. The most famous sculptures include The Thinker, The Kiss and The Gates of Hell and many of them are displayed in the extensive garden. There is also a room dedicated to the works of Camille Claudel. The museum consists of 2 sites: the Hôtel Biron and surrounding gardens (reviewed here) and the Villa des Brillants at Meudon, a few kms to the southwest of Paris.

Access & Transport

Visitors can easily get there walking from the Invalides, Eiffel Tower or Champs Elysees. By public transport, the closest metro/ train stations are Varenne (13), La Tour Maubourg (8) and Invalides (lines 8, 13 and RER C).

Instructions & Recommendations

Visitors should plan on spending about 1.5h there. This activity is best combined with a visit of the Invalides and Pont Alexandre III and a walk towards Champs de Mars / Eiffel Tower or Saint Germain des Prés neighbourhood.

Meta review

Visitors' reviews are overall very positive - both about the content of the sculptures and the gardens. There are no real complaints, but a sizeable number of reviewers lost interest quite quickly.

Environmental & Social

We do not have any data on the environmental aspects of the museum, other to say that it comprises a large and well-tended garden, which is rare in Paris city center. Slightly positive from a social aspect as it helps spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Rodin Museum is different from most of the other museums in the city with a heavy focus on one artist and one type of art (sculpture) - which means visitors may have quite distinct levels of interest. For those who are keen on it, this is a high-quality proposition that is enhanced by the very elegant gardens where some of the sculptures are exhibited.

Key negative

Not recommended for those who do not enjoy sculptures

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but children under 12 may not find this museum interesting. Both the museum and gardens are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility
