Museum of the American Revolution

101 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Description

The Museum of the American Revolution documents the American Revolution of 1765-91 that led to the creation and independence of the United States of America from the British Crown. It is located in Philadelphia's historical district where several of the foundational events took place. Exhibits include artwork, manuscripts, weapons, sculptures, and dioramas. The building was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects.

Access & Transport

The museum is 200m east of Independence Hall, on the eastern side of Philadelphia's city centre. Buses 21 and 57 stop next to the building on '3rd St & Chestnut St' and '5th St Independence Hall' subway station (MFL) is 5mins' walk away. Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with the Independence National Historical Park and a walk through the Society Hill neighbourhood.

Meta review

The museum is not always listed near the top of travel guides and bloggers shortlist for Philadelphia, but it does get solid online reviews. Visitors describe it as very informative, if a little shallow regarding military operations, with a balanced and diverse perspective provided by diverse groups (incl. slaves), using modern exhibits and well laid out. The highlights for many was the original tent used by George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

Environmental & Social

The building has a LEED gold certification with features such as using collected stormwater for cooling purposes and widespread use of LED lighting. Educational and helps preserve important historical artefacts.

Conclusion

The museum does a good job of explaining and documenting the American Revolution to those with little knowledge of it and is surprisingly family-friendly considering the topic. It might not be as in-depth as some military history buffs might wish for but for everybody else it is a good time investment.
