Society Hill neighbourhood, Philadelphia

210 West Washington Square, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Description

Society Hill is one of Philadelphia oldest residential neighbourhoods; it features 18th-early 19th century low rise rowhouses in Federal and Georgian architecture, cobblestone and Belgian block streets, and its Franklin street lamps. Notable monuments and highlights include The Merchants' Exchange Building in Greek Revival style, Washington Square with its tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier, Powel House (Samuel Powel was the last colonial mayor of the city and the first after independence was declared), Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church, Head House with its farmers' market, and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia.

Access & Transport

The neighbourhood is immediately south of the Independence Mall, on the eastern edge of Central Philadelphia (bordering the Delaware River). Several bus services (incl. 12, 40, 42, 57) stop in the area. The closest metro stations are '5th St Independence Hall' (MFL) and '9/10th & Locust Street' (PATCO), both within 10-15mins walk.

Meta review

This is travel guides' favourite Philadelphia neighbourhood for historical flavour and online reviewers do confirm it is more interesting than most of the commercial areas of the city centre. They enjoy the clean streets, interesting architecture, and historical points of interest. Nothing really exceptional, but an enjoyable walk. Powel House is described as well restored and furnished but small.

Environmental & Social

It is an urban environment but few high rises and a fair number of green spaces and trees. Some negative community impact from the rising rents that is partially compensated by the development of many independent businesses

Conclusion

Society Hill offers visitors the perfect opportunity for a casual urban walk that can be augmented with cultural and historical insights for those who feel so inclined. Nothing truly remarkable to take away but urban explorers and amateurs of architecture should enjoy it.
