Church of the Pilgrim Virgin (Pontevedra) - by Jiajun Ye on Google
Description
The church of the Pilgrim Virgin in Pontevedra was built in the late 18th century in Baroque and Neoclassical styles and stands out for its scallop shell floorplan (a symbol of pilgrimage) and its cupola. The sculpted main façade is preceded by an atrium with a staircase at the foot of which is a fountain with a sculpture of Teucer (the legendary founder of the city of Salamis who fought in the Trojan War alongside Ajax).
Access & Transport
The church is at the epicentre of the historical neighbourhood of Pontevedra, a 15mins walk from the train station. Pontevedra is 60km south of Santiago de Compostela (AP-9) or 1h by train and 30km north of Vigo (15mins by train)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this monument with the Pontevedra Museum.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the town's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
The church is in many ways the city's landmark and worth a quick stop if you happen to be in town but, despite its peculiarities, we do not think it warrants a significant detour when plotting your regional trip.
Key positive
Impressive facade and unusual layout
Possible to go up to the cupola for a token fee
Key negative
Quite small inside
