Description
The Pontevedra Museum (formerly the Pontevedra Provincial Museum) exhibits an eclectic range of artwork and artefacts encompassing archaeology, ethnography, sculpture, paintings, and decorative arts. It is housed in five buildings (García Flórez, Fernández López, Sarmiento, Castro Monteagudo, Castelao Building) and also includes the ruins of the San Domingo Church.
Access & Transport
The buildings are just south of the Ponte de Santiago, on the north side of the historical centre of town. The closest car parks are 'Pazo de Cultura' and 'Pontevedra Exhibition Centre'. The ruins are adjacent to the Alameda de Pontevedra. Pontevedra is 60km south of Santiago de Compostela (AP-9) or 1h by train and 30km north of Vigo (15mins by train). Instructions & Recommendations
*** The Castro Monteagudo and García Flórez buildings are temporarily closed for architectural refurbishment and renovation of their exhibition project *** We suggest combining this museum with a visit of the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin.
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of all but one of the buildings so low carbon footprint. Some educational value + preserves the region's artistic and the town's architectural heritages
Conclusion
An enjoyable provincial museum providing good insight into the region's history and some of its artists but, in our opinion, it tries to cover too many aspects and therefore fails to excel in any particular one.
Key positive
Educational and a few interesting artefacts and artworks
Some nice buildings and free admission
Key negative
No standout features or items
Suitability
Accessible for wheelchair users (lifts)
