Sil Canyon

Description

The Sil Canyon is a gorge carved by the Sil River, in Galicia, acting as a natural border between the provinces of Ourense and Lugo. The slopes are almost wall-like in certain places and up to 500m above the river; this creates a microclimate suitable for vineyards, specifically the D.O. Ribeira Sacra. There are some viewpoints, catamaran trips and hiking routes (up to 22km connecting the monasteries of San Esteban and Santa Cristina on the south bank)

Access & Transport

The north bank of the gorges is 80km south of Lugo and the south bank is 25km northeast of Ourense. From Santiago de Compostela, it is about 130km.

Instructions & Recommendations

Take a look at the map beforehand so as to decide whether to drive to the south or north bank depending on your desired activités.

Meta review

Excellent online reviews for this natural feature that is best discovered by car (not much alternatives). The attractions here are the wonderful views; the miradors of Vilouxe and Cabezoás are the most regularly mentioned in online reviews. Many visitors also seem to be happy with their discovery of the monasteries and the catamaran sailing that permit them to discover the gorges from a different perspective.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly attraction and tourism brings some economic activity to the villages in the area

Conclusion

The gorges of the Sil are undoubtedly one of the most striking landscapes in Galicia outside of the coastline. Not only that but one can do some hiking, visit monasteries or take a boat trip. The ingredients for a fantastic day out and no crowds

Key positive

Beautiful and impressive landscapes

Variety of things to see & do

Key negative

Need some time to get there

Suitability

Most viewpoints are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility but not the boat trips. Monasteries possible but with some help
