Monastery of Serra do Pilar

Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar - by Matija Merc on Google

Description
The Monastery of Serra do Pilar was built by the Order of St. Augustine during the 17th century on an outcrop overlooking the Douro river, across the historical centre of Porto. The design of the complex displays both Renaissance and Mannerist elements and is notable for its circular church and cloister (both have a similar diameter). Its strategic position led to it acting as the main Liberal stronghold during the Siege of Porto and being fortified during the 19th century.
Access & Transport
The monastery is on the south bank of the Douro river, in the Vila Nova de Gaia district, just to the east of the upper deck landing of the Luis I bridge and the Jardim do Morro metro station (D). There is a slanted pedestrian road/ramp up to the complex so it is accessible to wheelchair users.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest coming here to enjoy both the buildings and the views of the city across the bridge and the river. Sunset might be a good time to look towards the west.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural and historical heritages.
Conclusion
Come for the views and you will not be disappointed. The historical background is also impressive but architecturally, past the curiosity of the circular layout, there is not much to feast one's eyes on.
Key positive
Fantastic views over Porto and the Douro
Easy to reach walking or by metro
Key negative
Not that much to see inside the buildings
Suitability
Accessible
