National Technical Museum, Prague

Kostelní, Holešovice, Hlavní město Praha

Description

Prague's National Technical Museum houses collections spanning several domains of sciences and industry. It is housed in a large building designed in Functionalist style by Milan Babuška in the early 1940s. The largest collection is that relating to transportation, which narrates the developments of automobiles, motorcycle, bicycles, air, sea and rail transport. Other major exhibitions include printing, chemistry, chronometry (time measurement, including watchmaking), mining with equipment and machinery on display, metallurgy and its impact on civilization, and astronomy.

Access & Transport

The museum is next to Letna Park, across the Štefánikův bridge from the Jewish Quarter / Old Town. The Nábřeží Kapitána Jaroše and Kamenická tram stations are less than 5mins walk away. There are parking spaces on site.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with a walk through Letna Park from where one can enjoy nice views over Prague. The National Museum of Agriculture is also located there.

Meta review

Positive online reviews for this museum, and not just from parents. It is described as having a lot to see, with proper info panels in English, although technically not advanced enough for enthusiasts, and the highlight for most people is the transport hall. The price is qualified as "correct" and the main area of improvement is possibly the curation which is very standard and could do with some modernization and interactive exhibits.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data or policy available online. Minor carbon footprint on a per visitor basis. Educational aspects

Conclusion

The National Technical Museum of Prague is an interesting venue for visitors of all ages; residents are the primary audience but tourists will find highlights such as the transport exhibition that justify the short trip out of the Old Town. Recommended for the curious minded.
