Description
The Powder Tower or Gate (Prašná brána) was one of the original 13 city gates of Prague's Old Town. It was built in Gothic style in the later part of the 15th century and used to store gunpowder during the 17th century. Historically, this was the gate used by the coronation processions of Bohemian kings to enter the town. It is 65m and visitors can take a 186 steps spiral staircase to the observation deck, 44m above ground.
Access & Transport
The gate is on the eastern edge of the old town, 400m from the Old Town Square. The Náměstí Republiky (metro line B and trams) is around the corner.
Instructions & Recommendations
If you plan ahead, there are guided tours of the gorgeous Municipal House neighbouring the gate.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint besides the lighting at night. Part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
Probably the most visually impressive of the old town gates, it is definitely worth a look but we think the admission fee is mispriced so would pass on the climb
Key positive
Photogenic
Centrally located with public transport options
Key negative
The admission fee to climb up is expensive
Suitability
Visitors with reduced mobility will not be able to go up the stairs to the observation deck
