Troja Palace

4 U Trojského zámku, Praha-Troja, Hlavní město Praha

Description

Troja Palace (Zámek Troja) was designed in the northern outskirts of Prague for the Counts of Sternberg by architect Jean Baptiste Mathey in the late 17th century. The Baroque façade is complemented by a grand staircase with sculpted statues along the central axis of a formal French garden. Inside, the main room is decorated with a fresco painted by the Godijn brothers using a trompe-l'œil perspective. Nowadays, the palace is used to exhibits the 19th century Czech art collections of the City Gallery.

Access & Transport

Address: U Trojského zámku 1/4, 170 00 Prague 7 The estate is in the Troja district, next to the Zoo and 6km north of Prague's old town. It is served by bus 112 from Nádraží Holešovice metro station on line C. Alternatively, you can use the tram 17 until Trojská and either walk 10mins or take bus 112.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit here with either the Zoo or the Botanical Garden.

Meta review

Not always listed in guidebooks or covered by bloggers, the chateau/palace gets good online reviews but not more. It is a rather small estate, with a very impressive staircase and the highlight is undoubtedly the magnificent frescoes. Other rooms have good deco and some interesting artwork but little by way of furnishing.

Environmental & Social

We deem this attraction environmentally neutral. Preserves the city's architectural and artistic heritages

Conclusion

The palace is a nice addition, between April and October, to a visit of the zoo next door or the nearby botanical gardens. If you enjoy Italian-style villas and Baroque frescoes, then this is a good sample.
