Description
Girona Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Maria de Girona) is a Roman catholic church that started to be built in the 11th century in Romanesque style (can be seen in the cloister and the older bell tower) but then shifted over time to Gothic until its completion in the 13th century. It has the second widest nave of any church after Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome at 23m and the vault height is 35m. The current facade is Baroque and the second bell tower was built in the 17/18th century. The Collegiate Church of St. Felix (Basilica of Sant Feliu) construction timeline and style runs somewhat parallel to that of the Cathedral: it was built in stages from the 12th to the 17th, has an architecture that is part Romanesque and part Gothic and a Baroque facade. It is known for its eight Roman and early Christian sarcophagi (3rd / 4th centuries) and the Chapel of St. Narcissus
Access & Transport
The 2 churches are on the north-eastern side of the city's old quarter - you can't miss them. Girona has its own airport (15km south): Girona Costa Brave. It can also be reached easily from Barcelona by train (60-90') or car (Expressway AP-7, 105km) and is located on the train line between France and Barcelona.
Instructions & Recommendations
At the time of this review advanced booking were required and the allotted time is 60mins for the Cathedral and 30mins for the Basilica of Sant Feliu We recommend a full visit of the city which can be done in 4-6h and why not join an evening tapas tour.
Environmental & Social
The running environmental footprint is low. Part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages
Conclusion
The Cathedral and Basilica form a fantastic duo for tourists and define the city's skyline. Unless you really are not into religious buildings, we feel that it would be a missed opportunity not to discover them when visiting the city. However, if Girona doesn't appeal to you, then there are plenty of other cultural and architectural alternatives in the region.
Key positive
One of the most impressive naves in a Christian church
Very centrally located in the city with an emblematic flight of stairs leading up to it
Key negative
None of the churches have a lot of artistic content
Suitability
No religious denomination restrictions. Partially accessible: there is a way around the front stairs (car drop off also possible), but several parts of the churches have a few small steps.
