Sant Pere de Rodes monastery - by LoggaWiggler from Pixabay
Description
Sant Pere de Rodes monastery was founded in the 10th century AD but was sacked in the 17th century so it is no longer in activity, except as a monument to be visited. It was built primarily in Romanesque style notable for its combination of columns and side aisles to support the central nave; and its construction over three level, due to its setting on a slope of the Verdera Mountain. Nearby visitors can also enjoy the views over the Bay of Llançà and find the ruins of a church, a medieval town and the Castle of Sant Verdera.
Access & Transport
Address: Camí del Monestir, El Port de la Selva Car is the only real option given the setting of the monastery atop the hill. El Port de Selva is the closest town (7km / 12mins), Cadaqués is 20km/30mins away and Figueres is 25km / 35mins away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that it takes a bit of time to drive up to the monastery so plan accordingly and try to select a day with good visibility to enjoy the views. A visit there is best done from Girona or Cadaqués and is the perfect opportunity to discover the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
Environmental & Social
Helps preserve the region's architectural heritage. Environmentally neutral
Conclusion
Sant Pere de Rodes monastery is worth the drive in our opinion, and can make for a great hiking + cultural activity combo, nicely complemented by a lunch within the complex itself and an extension to go and check out the Castle of Sant Verdera.
