Lleida Museum

1 Carrer del Sant Crist, Lérida, Cataluña

Description

Lleida Museum, officially the Diocesan and Comarcal Lleida Museum, hosts various art and architectural collections spanning the Roman, Islamic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. It is located in Lleida in western Catalunya. The permanent exhibition displays over 1000 artworks and artefacts including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, clothing, coins and archaeological remains with a focus on the region of Lleida and parts of Aragon.

Access & Transport

The museum is in the city centre of Lleida at 1 Carrer del Sant Crist Lleida is 150km west of Barcelona, a 2h drive or 70mins train ride on the AVE (from Barcelona Sants station). It is also 100km / 70mins drive from Tarragona or 2h by regional express train.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the city of Lleida. Alternatively, Mont-Ribei Gorges are 1h30 drive away and the Santa María de Poblet monastery is 45mins away (half way to Tarragona)

Meta review

This regional museum gets complimentary reviews for the quality of the romanesque ecclesiastical art and its well-preserved artifacts dating back from the early hominids. The main drawback for foreign tourists is the lack of English translations (few international visitors apparently)

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective as it helps spread culture and preserve some of the region's artefacts.

Conclusion

Any visitor to the city or its surrounding area who is keen on cultural activities should consider including a visit there to his/her itinerary. The presentation is excellent and there is a wide range of artwork and archaeological artefacts to generate and maintain interest for a couple of hours at least.
