Mont-rebei gorge

Camí del Coll d'Ares, Lleida, Catalunya

Description

The Gorge of Mont-rebei (in Catalan: Congost de Mont-rebei) is part of the Montsec range in the Pyrenean foothills, between the provinces of Huesca (Aragon) and Lleida (Catalonia). The natural formation was created by the eroding action of the Noguera Ribagorzana river; the gorges are up to 500m high and at its narrowest only 20m separates both sides with the path at times directly excavated in the rock. The standard trail consists of an out and back between the parking of la Masieta and the bridge of Del Siegue (5km) or up to the Montfalcó refuge (7.4km) - this means a total walk of 10 to 17km taking 3.0 to 5.5h. We recommend going at least past the bridge until the "Pasarelas de Montfalcó", wooden staircases set against a vertical cliffside. Access & Transport

There are 3 main access points, all 90-100km / 1h30 drive to the north of Lleida: - the Parking of la Masieta which involves driving through the Montsec range - the parking of la Pertusa from where it is a short but steep climb to the Hermitage - the refuge / albergue de Montfalcó (in Huesca) The following link includes additional details and options: https://congostmontrebei.com/como-llegar-2

Instructions & Recommendations

Get your bearings on a map before driving there. Wear walking boots on shoes with rubber soles / proper grip, sunblock, hat/cap and bring some water with you.

Meta review

It is probably because of the lack of infrastructure, but this natural feature doesn't seem to be very well known. Reviews are however excellent, stressing the breath-taking views. Many also recommend a kayak trip, especially if visiting with younger children or people with medical conditions for whom the walk along a narrow trail with some steep sections may not be indicated. There is a useful word of caution that the road from Viacamp to Montfalcon is stony with potholes so make sure your car can handle it if you that is your chosen approach.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Socially neutral.

Conclusion

The Mont-rebei "congost" is an unexpected gem at the border between Aragon and Catalunya, accessible from Lleida or a longish drive from Barcelona. With a bit of advanced planning, it can occupy visitors for at least 2 half days, there is hiking and kayaking but it is also popular with climbers and there are several via ferratas in the area. Highly recommended for outdoor and physical activities enthusiasts
