Delta de l'Ebre Natural Park

Carrer Doctor Martí Buera, Deltebre, Catalunya

Description

The Ebro Delta ("Delta de l'Ebre" in Catalan) is a large wetland area (320 km2) formed by the delta region of the Ebro River in southwestern Catalunya. A large part (78 km2) is designated as a natural park that includes marshes, wetlands, salt pans, estuaries and beaches. It has nearly 100 breeding species of birds and over 300 wintering or transient ones.

Access & Transport

The park is located roughly in between Barcelona and Valencia (~190km) with the AP-7 to Amposta being the fastest route (exit 41). By train, the closest stations are Amposta, Camarles and l´Ampolla on the Barcelona-Valencia line.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you happen to have binoculars, bring some to better observe birds. Also, don't forget the usual sun protection equipment (hat/cap, sunblock, sunglasses) and carry some water with you. There are several excellent beaches within the Delta, including Playa del Trabucador that we have reviewed separately.

Meta review

Excellent reviews for this little-known attraction beyond the Spanish borders. Visitors highlight the excellent bird watching, including flamingos if lucky, the many viewing places (towers and platforms) and the 100% natural sand and uncrowded beaches across a very extensive area.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity that educates visitors about the local ecosystems. Socially marginally positive thanks to the small economic activity derived from tourism

Conclusion

The Ebro Delta is one of Catalunya's most unusual and interesting outdoor environment and the perfect place to avoid crowds in summer. Don't expect anything stunning though, partially because most of the area has been given over to rice cultivation, but if you are a little tired of visiting towns and monasteries this will provide an excellent opportunity to discover another aspect of the region. It can also make for the perfect half-day break when travelling between Barcelona (or Tarragona) and Valencia.

Key positive

Excellent bird watching

Not busy

Key negative

No standout natural feature

Suitability

Suitable for all ages. Visitors with reduced mobility will be able to discover most of the area by car but will not be able to use all walking paths, especially in the wetlands and marsh areas.
