Playa del Trabucador, Delta de l’Ebre

Sendero de Playa, Spain,

Description

Playa del Trabucador (Trabucador beach) is a 6.5km stretch of beach with shallow waters within the Ebro Delta ("Delta de l'Ebre" in Catalan), a large wetland area (320 km2) formed by the delta region of the Ebro River in southwestern Catalunya. It is a "wild" beach in the sense that there is no residential development or tourist infrastructure along the beach itself.

Access & Transport

The Ebro Delta is located roughly in between Barcelona and Valencia (~190km) with the AP-7 to Amposta being the fastest route (exit 41). By train, the closest stations are Amposta, Camarles and l´Ampolla on the Barcelona-Valencia line. From Amposta, take the TV-3405 and then turn right / south just before you reach L'Eucaliptus. Alternatively, you can keep to the coastal road from Sant Carles de la Ràpita until you reach the beach.

Instructions & Recommendations

Don't forget the usual sun protection equipment (hat/cap, sunblock, sunglasses) and carry some water with you. This activity is best combined with a visit of the rest of the Delta de l'Ebre Natural Park (reviewed separately).

Meta review

The beach gets excellent reviews from residents of the area (a popular spot for kitesurfers and families on the weekends) and travellers alike. Visitors highlight the interesting journey through rice fields, the spotting of flamingos and the experience of driving and parking directly on the sand. They also recommend bringing your own drink as there is no cafe / restaurant directly by the beach although the villages are only a short drive away.

Environmental & Social

Green activity Socially marginally positive as tourism brings a little economic activity to the surrounding villages

Conclusion

The Playa del Trabucador is very much the type of beach outdoor enthusiasts look for: spacious, without residential developments or herds of tourists. It also has the advantage to be within the Ebro Delta Natural Park, a bird's haven, and be accessible by car without traffic issues. Not one for beachgoers who need a lounger and pina coladas.

Key positive

Exceptionally long stretch of sand so easy to find your own space

Not every day you can see flamingos in their natural environment

Key negative

Waters generally not transparent and windy conditions

Suitability

Since cars get drive along the beach and park there, visitors with reduced mobility can access it.
