PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park

s/n Avinguda de l'Alcalde Pere Molas, Tarragona, Catalunya

Description

PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park is part of the PortAventura World complex alongside PortAventura Park and Ferrari Land. The 17 listed rides mostly consist of pools (some with waves) and water slides of varying thrill level and height requirements.

Access & Transport

The complex is just north of the seaside resort town of Salou, 12km to the southwest of Tarragona. By car, it is easily accessible by taking exit 1153 on the A-7 expressway. From Barcelona, it is a 1h30 car drive or train ride to Salou-PortAventura train station. More options / details available here: https://www.portaventuraworld.com/en/destination/planning/how-to-get-to-portaventura

Instructions & Recommendations

Please note the age and weight requirements for many of the rides (applicable for safety reasons) and don't forget to bring your swimming attire, some sunblock, hat/cap and sunglasses. It is also worth checking the various multi-day multi-park combo tickets. If you have a car and drive from outside Tarragona do note that the city has extremely interesting Roman ruins (in the centre and an Aqueduct on its northern outskirt called Les Ferreres or Pont del Diable)

Meta review

This well-known sibling to PortAventura Park is getting very mixed (and conflicting) reviews to say the least but the essence of visitors' feedback is that whilst there is a good ride selection, overcrowding is a major issue. It starts from the get-go with loungers fully occupied right after opening, busy pools and long waiting lines for rides and even food. We also note several surprised comments that sunglasses or hat not allowed in the pool (we can understand the former but not the latter).

Environmental & Social

The operator has a generic environmental policy, but we could not find many details about specific projects and data. Our view is that water parks are a bit wasteful (water, plastic, food). Likewise in terms of Corporate Responsibility although they do have a foundation that aims to raise awareness against social exclusion. Details here: https://www.portaventuraworld.com/en/foundation

Conclusion

The water park is a great option for families, with a mix of adrenaline inducing rides and a lot of kid friendly options - although do note that age / size is a limiting factor for most rides (as it should) and that is no different from other theme and water parks. However, profits should not come to the detriment of customers experience and, from what we gather, the long wait between rides makes this attraction overpriced and hard to recommend until the issues are addressed.

Key positive

Family friendly

A fun day or half day out in the water

Key negative

Poor value given the waiting times

Suitability

This is best suited for families looking for kids / teens friendly activities and who have a decent budget. Not recommended for visitors with mobility issues as they would not be able to enjoy most of the slides
