Description
PortAventura Park is one of Europe's most visited theme parks in Europe and is part of the PortAventura World complex alongside PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park and Ferrari Land. There are six themed areas inside: Mediterrània (inspired by a fishing village), Polynesia (jungle), China, Mexico (with a Mayan pyramid), SésamoAventura (with Sesame Street characters) and Far West (think cowboys). The most famous rides include Shanbala and Dragon Khan roller coasters, Hurakan Condor, Tutuki Splash and El Diablo train.
Access & Transport
The complex is just north of the seaside resort town of Salou, 12km to the southwest of Tarragona. By car, it is easily accessible by taking exit 1153 on the A-7 expressway. From Barcelona, it is a 1h30 car drive or train ride to Salou-PortAventura train station. Instructions & Recommendations
Please note the age and weight requirements for many of the rides (applicable for safety reasons). For those into theme and amusement parks, it may be worth checking the various multi-day multi-park combo tickets. If you have a car and drive from outside Tarragona do note that the city has extremely interesting Roman ruins (in the centre and an Aqueduct on its northern outskirt called Les Ferreres or Pont del Diable)
Environmental & Social
The operator has a generic environmental policy, but we could not find many details about specific projects and data. Our view is that theme parks are highly wasteful (energy, plastic, food). Likewise in terms of Corporate Responsibility although they do have a foundation that aims to raise awareness against social exclusion. Details here: https://www.portaventuraworld.com/en/foundation
Conclusion
PortAventura Park delivers in thrills but considering the ticket price and long waiting lines for the main rides the value is highly debatable. If you are a regular to that part of Spain then by all means invest that time and money there, but if you have not explored Catalunya we think there are more interesting things to see and do.
