Poblet Monastery - by Management

Description
The Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Poblet was founded in the middle of the 12th century by Cistercian monks from France. It is in the comarca of Conca de Barberà, in Catalonia, at the foot of the Prades Mountains. From the 13th to the end of the 15th century, the Monastery was the burial place for the kings of the Crown of Aragon . It was closed down in 1835 following the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal after which it fell into disrepair until it was refounded in 1940 by Italian monks. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

Instructions & Recommendations
Logistically, this activity is best combined with a visit of the city of Lleida, including the Lleida Museum or activities in or around Tarragona.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritages.
Conclusion
The Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet warrants a half-day trip from Tarragona or on the way to/from Lleida. In our opinion, the draw is the aesthetic rather than the art inside, so depending on your interest there may be better options in southern Catalunya.
Key positive
Gorgeous mountainous backdrop
Interesting history and tombs related to the Aragon Crown
Key negative
A little expensive
Lack of information available in English and French
