Musee Basque - by Nicolas Chalmin on Google
Description
The Basque Museum holds the biggest collection of artwork and artefacts devoted to the people, culture and customs of the Northern Basque region (French Basque Country) as well as the history of the city of Bayonne. Topics covered include the Basques origin and language, funeral rituals, craftsmanship and rural life, celebrations and games, and regional history. The museum is housed in the Maison Dagourette, a late 16th century town house (listed as an historic monument) on the banks of the River Nive.
Access & Transport
The museum is located at 37 quai des Corsaires in Bayonne. Bayonne itself can easily be reached by air (Biarritz airport is less than 10kms away), train (from Paris/Bordeaux or Toulouse/Pau) and car (exit #6 on the A63).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the Vieux Bayonne (the old centre of town).
Environmental & Social
Minor usage of electricity. Helps preserve the region's cultural and historical heritages and educate visitors
Conclusion
The Basque Museum is an excellent option for those wanting to learn more about the regional culture and history. Do not expect to see plenty of masterpieces but, rather, a visual representation of many aspects of the life and customs of this fascinating part of the world.
