Gorges de Kakuetta

Place de la Mairie, Saint-Étienne, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Description

The Kakuetta Gorges are a natural canyon-like formation along a small river in the commune of Sainte-Engrâce in the eastern part of the French Basque Country (Soule), in the foothills of the Pyrénées mountain range. The gorges are 4km long and can be visited as an out-and-back or on a l8km loop trail. Highlights include a waterfall, a grotto and the "big straight" (narrowest point of the passageway - only a couple of meters between the two sides of the cliff). *** Closed since 2021 for safety reasons ***

Access & Transport

Tickets can be purchased at the bar by the entrance: "Bar des cascades" Sainte-Engrâce is 75km to the Southwest of Pau. Driving directions from there consist in first driving to Oloron Sainte Marie on the N134 (35mns) and continuing on the D919 to Aramits. Shortly afterwards turn right (westbound) on the D918 and then left (southbound) on the D26 shortly after the village of Montory. Once you have gone past Licq-Athérey, take left on the D113 until you reach. Expect the journey to take about 1h30mins.

Instructions & Recommendations

Wear walking boots or shoes with rubber soles as the path is often slippery + bring some water with you.

Meta review

Mostly excellent reviews - visitors enjoy the scenery and dramatic change of ecosystem past the entrance. For most, it makes for a great half day outing if you are in the region but may not be worth a long-range journey by itself. Most of the negative comments relate to the crowd during the summer holidays of July / August and the absence of warning that a few short sections require some degree of fitness.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the local community.

Conclusion

The Kakuetta Gorges is a great option for those looking for a short hike in a beautiful environment with an original topography. It gets very (too) popular during the peak summer season though, and it is quite out of the way, so we would recommend this attraction for those taking more time to discover the region.

Key positive

Very spectacular in some sections

Key negative

Crowded in the summer months

Time consuming to get there

Suitability

Best for those aged between 5 and 70 with a minimum degree of fitness because there are some short steep sections and the path can be very slippery. The path is not accessible to anybody with reduced mobility.
