Bioparco di Roma

20 Viale del Giardino Zoologico, Roma, Lazio

Description

Bioparco di Roma is a zoological garden located within the Villa Borghese Gardens in Rome. Originally designed by Carl Hagenbeck (who created the zoo named after him in Hamburg) in the 1910's, it replaced cages by natural moats. The Biopark is home to about 1200 animals of about 150 species including reptiles, mammals, and birds. They are all animals born at the Biopark or at other zoological facilities with the exception of trafficked animals seized by the authorities.

Access & Transport

Address: 1 Piazzale del Giardino Zoologico This is inside the Villa Borghese Gardens The "Bioparco" tram stop (2, 3L, 19) is 250m north of the park and "Alvodri" is the same distance to the west. There are also bus stops there and at "Bioparco/Mercadante" on Via Saverio Mercadante.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that the various sections start closing 30-60min before the park's closing time: 60mins for reptiles and felines is 60mins, 45mins for chimpanzees and 30mins for giraffes, bears, rhinos, and elephants. Other nearby attractions include the Galleria Nazionale, the Borghese Gallery, and the Villa Borghese Gardens

Meta review

Excluding the usual anti-zoo reviews that make no distinctions among venues, the Bioparco gets good comments overall. Some find the enclosures on the small side whereas other find them quite large (yes, it's the same zoo) but the animals look well cared for and at ease even though they are often bothered by unruly younger visitors. There are good comments about the reptile house, the play areas for kids but negative ones about the price and quality of the food served at the cafe inside.

Environmental & Social

The park is run by a foundation, it has educational programs for schools, conducts research and focuses on the conservation of endangered species with no animal purchased. More info: https://www.bioparco.it/animali/ and here: https://www.bioparco.it/zoo-roma-mission/

Conclusion

The Bioparco di Roma makes for an excellent family half-day activity and can be combined with some time in the surrounding Villa Borghese Gardens. There is wide range of species and, although the ethical issue of keeping animals in activity should give you pause for thought, this zoological garden has good conservation and educational credentials.
