Description
The Borghese Gallery houses sculptures, antiquities and paintings that are part of the Borghese Collection started by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The artworks are displayed in the suburban villa designed for him in the early 17th century and surrounded by what are now the Villa Borghese Gardens. As a patron of Bernini and early collector of Caravaggio, those two artists are extremely well represented with works such as Apollo and Daphne, the Rape of Proserpine, Saint Jerome Writing and the Madonna, Child and Serpent. There are also some Rubens and Titian paintings and first-rate ceiling frescos by the like of Mariano Rossi.
