Capitoline Museums

1 Piazza del Campidoglio, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Capitoline Museums contain collections of ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian statues and artifacts, medieval and Renaissance art, coins, and jewellery. The museum is located on Capitoline Hill and consists of three buildings, namely the 12th century Palazzo Senatorio, the 16th century Palazzo dei Conservatori, and the 17th century Palazzo Nuovo sporting a consistent exterior design. Between them is the Piazza del Campidoglio with the equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The buildings are linked up underground through the Galleria di Congiunzione that houses the collection of epigraphs in the Galleria Lapidaria. Finally, there is a glass covered hall designed in 1996 by architect Carlo Aymonino called the New wing.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is best combined with Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum.

Meta review

The museums are highly rated for their content and the views over the Roman Forum. Highlights for visitors include the sculptures of the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus and that of Marcus Aurelius, as well as the comparative lack of crowds. The main recurring complaint relates to unfriendly staff behaviour, both at the front desk and at the time of closing. The usual advice of hiring a guide is more pronounced in reviews for this museum which could do with more information panels.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve a cultural and architectural heritage

Conclusion

The Capitoline Museums are not the first cultural venues that comes to mind in Rome but they are certainly worth a visit, possibly on a second trip for those who are short on time. Entrance is fairly priced and there is plenty to occupy 2h-3h depending on personal interests. It is also conveniently located between the Modern Centre and the Roman ruins.
