Circo Maximo VR experience

Via del Circo Massimo, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Circo Maximo Experience enables customers to experience Rome's Circus Maximus through augmented and virtual reality (AR & VR) using individual headsets. The 40-min walking itinerary includes 8 stops showcasing the virtually-rendered area at different times throughout history and finishing with a "Day at the Circus". The experience is available in 8 languages. The Circus Maximus is located next to the Palatine Hill and was used in ancient Rome as a chariot-racing stadium and mass entertainment venue. It measured 621x1118m and could accommodate up to 150,000 spectators. Today, it is a public park and is regularly used for concerts and events.

Access & Transport

The ticket counter is at the Circus Maximus entrance on Viale Aventino Metro station Circo Massimo (MEB, MEB1) along with some bus stops are at the eastern end of the Circus and there are also bus stops at the north-western end, near the Ponte Palatino.

Instructions & Recommendations

In case of rain, all shows will be cancelled. Children under 14 can wear the headsets and enjoy the experience only if accompanied by an adult who must sign the disclaimer (available online and at the ticket office). To rent the headset, you must leave in deposit an ID.

Meta review

Reviews for the experience are quite mixed though the broader message is actually consistent: great idea but the experience needs improvement, especially as relates to the graphics and resolution. A few mentions of dizziness as well.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint (beyond the production of the headsets). Socially neutral

Conclusion

The VR experience is worth checking out for those who find looking at ruins a little "dry", but don't have high expectations for the time being. We are pretty confident that the tech is going to improve dramatically in the next few years and the Circus Maximus is a good choice of venue for such an experience.
