Doria Pamphili Gallery

305 Via del Corso, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Doria Pamphilj Gallery exhibits a large art collection housed in what is probably the largest private palace in Rome: the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. It belongs to the princely Roman family of Genoese extraction Doria Pamphilj that included members of the Doria, Pamphilj, Landi, and Aldobrandini families united through marriage and descent. The paintings, statuary and furniture have been accumulated since the 16th century and are displayed in gilded and painted galleries surrounding a courtyard and more traditional state rooms. Highlights include Velázquez's Portrait of Innocent X and works by Caravaggio, Titian, Filippo Lippi, and Bernini.

Meta review

There are many top-tier private galleries in Rome and, although it this one is generally featured in most travel guidebooks and blogs. The online reviews are quite consistent (although ratings vary significantly): the collection are extremely impressive and so it the Palazzo. The way the paintings are exhibited though is sub-par with oftentimes poor lighting and a lack of information about each artwork, something the audio-guides only remedy partially.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity marginally negative from an environmental standpoint (electricity consumption). The family trust is in charge of the architectural and artistic conservation.

Conclusion

The Doria Pamphili Gallery really is a feast for the eyes, blending architecture, deco, and artwork. It is only let down by a very average display style with the galleries and state rooms being heavily decorated; sometimes less is more.
