MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Art

4A Via Guido Reni, Roma, Lazio

Description

MAXXI or National Museum of 21st Century Art is a contemporary art and architecture museum located in the Flaminio neighbourhood of Rome. It was designed by architect Zaha Hadid and built on the site of former military barracks, incorporating parts of it. The architecture museum consists of 3 collections: twentieth century, twenty-first century and photography. The art collections include over 400 works consisting of painting installations, sculptures, and video art from renown and Italian and international artists. Fun fact: the museum sells a "legendary ticket" priced only 3€ more than the regular entrance that is valid for "one entry to the Museum and all current exhibitions for the next 100 years, until 2121". Nice advertising stunt!

Meta review

Incredibly mixed reviews for MAXXI despite being a relatively well-known artistic venue - mostly because of the Zahid's architectural brand name. For many, the building and interior spaces are the highlight, although sometimes challenging to navigate, but are not sufficient to save the experience unless there is an interesting temporary exhibition going on. This implies that most reviewers are disappointed by the content of the permanent exhibition, by the curation skills (or lack thereof) and the staff attitude. The architects' studios get a few positive comments though.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

Our view is one should visit MAXXI for the architecture (building and collection) or for a specific exhibition you are keen on, but not for the art. That is until improvements are made around quality and curation of the permanent collection.

Key negative

Weak permanent collection "core"

A little out of the way from other tourist attractions / not central
