St. Clement Basilica & excavations

95 Via Labicana, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Basilica of Saint Clement is a 12th century Catholic church located in Rome and dedicated to Pope Clement I. The three-tiered structure has historically served at least four purposes. At the bottom are the remnants of a building (presumably a warehouse or nobleman villa) likely to have been destroyed during the city's Great Fire of AD64. Another part of the remaining structure was used around the 3rd century as a mithraeum (for the cult of Mithas) and, above that, is a 4th century basilica that was used for papal councils and elections. The current basilica highlights are its apse mosaic and frescoed wooden ceiling. The duration of the visit is 30mins and includes the Lower Basilica, the Archaeological site, the Temple of Mithras, and the Roman Houses.

Access & Transport

The entrance is on Piazza di San Clemente The church is next to tram station "Labicana" (8) and buses 51, 75, 85 and 87 also stop there. It is only a 5mins walk to Colosseo tram (8), metro (MEB, MEB1) and bus stations. Due to the architectural structure of the Complex, the Excavations cannot be accessed in a wheelchair

Instructions & Recommendations

Advance booking is required and children under 16yrs old must be accompanied by an adult. Photography and filming are not allowed in the Basilica and in the excavations

Meta review

Strong consensus in online reviews about how interesting the church with its excavations are from a cultural and historical standpoint, the apse's mosaic being the artistic highlight. However, it is not all full marks for the attraction with many visitors stating their disappointment with respect to the service quality (unfriendly guards and lack of maintenance).

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the city's cultural and architectural heritage

Conclusion

St. Clement Basilica is a gem for history buffs, allowing visitors to literally dive into the city's multi-layered past. If it weren't Rome, it would surely be much more popular.
