Trevi Fountain

Piazza di Trevi, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, standing 26m high and 49m wide. It was designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and built in the mid-18th century at the junction of three roads ("Trivium = intersection of 3 streets, hence the name "Trevi"), at the terminal point of the updated Aqua Virgo aqueduct that brought water to Rome. The theme of the sculptures is the taming of the waters featuring Oceanus (the son of titans and father of the river Gods) with Palazzo Poli as the backdrop and an obvious Rococo influence. In cinematography, the most popular scene shot there is probably that of La Dolce Vita from Federico Fellini featuring Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni. Trivia: an estimated 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain each day. The money is used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy

Access & Transport

The fountain is on Piazza di Trevi, 150m east of Via del Corso. Metro station "Barberini" (MEA) is 600m away and there are a few bus services plying Via del Tritone and Via del Corso.

Instructions & Recommendations

It can get very crowded so visiting early morning can be a good idea. Other nearby attractions include the Quirinal Palace & Gardens, the Doria Pamphili Gallery and, for shopping, the Galleria Alberto Sordi.

Meta review

Trevi is one of the most famous fountains in the world and accordingly, well helped by the social networks' insanity, it is continuously packed full. That makes many reviewers acknowledge that yes, it is worth seeing (although some find it simply over-rated), but that the experience is very average. A recurring advice is to go at night for the impressive lighting.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally, there is no data on the fountain, but lighting was upgraded to LED a few years ago. Socially positive as it helps preserve the city's cultural and architectural heritages, but the area is over-commercialized. The positive point is that, in theory, the coins thrown by tourists are used for charity.

Conclusion

Is the Trevi Fountain gorgeous? Yes. Is it a must-see? Not really. What we mean is that whilst the fountain is impressive, the crowds also are and there are so many other fantastic sights in the city that if you have not managed to squeeze this monument in your itinerary, don't feel like you missed out on something important.
