Villa Borghese Gardens

piazzale Napoleone I, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Villa Borghese Gardens is a landscaped garden initially developed for the Villa Borghese Pinciana (on the Pincian Hill) and is today one of the largest public parks in Rome (80ha). There are several buildings spread across the park such as the Villa Medici, the museum Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, the Villa Giulia housing the Etruscan Museum or the English pavilion from the 1911 expo. Other points of interest include the water clock, the Bioparco, the Zoological Museum, the lake with the Temple of Asclepius, Piazza di Sienna, and the Temple of Diana.

Access & Transport

The park is immediately east of Piazza del Popolo and Flaminio train and metro stations, and north of Porta Pinciana. There are buses running through the south-western end along Viale San Paolo del Brasile / Viale Fiorello La Guardia. Finally, the trams 2, 3L, and 19 stop at Aldrovandi and Bioparco stations, at the northern edge of the gardens.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Bioparco or one of the museums: Borghese Gallery, Etruscan Museum, or the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Meta review

The park is the most popular in Rome and well rated by residents and tourists alike who enjoyed the array of facilities (lake, play areas for children) and the multitude of sculptures and other artistic features spread throughout. Based on online reviews, it is rather well-kept, though not perfect and the lake area is a favourite alongside the views from the Pincio look-out.

Environmental & Social

Green activity. Preserves the city's architectural heritage and offers a high-quality environment to residents

Conclusion

The park makes for a very enjoyable and relaxing break from the rest of Rome cultural and urban attractions. It has several attention-worthy features and is the perfect place to rest after a visit to one of the nearby museums or for a family Sunday outing / picnic.
