Villa Farnesina

230 Via della Lungara, Roma, Lazio

Description

The Villa Farnesina is one of Rome's most famous Renaissance private villas (now a museum); it belonged to the wealthy Sienese banker and art patron Agostino Chigi who also was the treasurer of Pope Julius II before being acquired by the Farnese family in 1577. The villa is located in the Trastevere neighbourhood and was built in 1506-10 following a design by architect Peruzzi. For the fresco decoration, famous artists such as Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi (known as Sodoma), and Peruzzi himself contributed. The most famous frescoes are Cupid and Psyche, and The Triumph of Galatea painted by Raphael.

Access & Transport

Address: 230 Via della Lungara Buses 23 and 280 stop at "Lgt Farnesina" near the entrance. The easiest way to get there is to walk across Ponte Giuseppe Mazzini or Ponte Sisto in the Old City or even from Vatican / Castel Sant'Angelo. The closest tram stop is Belli (8), 1km away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Important restoration work was ongoing in the Loggia of Galatea and in the Hall of Perspectives, these will have an impact on the quality of visits but that may be changing as there was a new exhibition at the time of this review with a higher admission price of 16 euros) Make sure to also explore the Trastevere neighbourhood and, if you are keen on another villa-museum, the Palazzo Corsini is next to Villa Farnesina

Meta review

The villa was getting highly rated until recently when the renovations started and whilst many reviewers confirm that it is still worth visiting, a majority is upset because there was no mention of it at the reception when they bought the ticket which remains priced at the normal rate whereas nearly half the paintings / frescoes can't be seen.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmental neutral. It helps spread the arts and preserves the city's architectural and artistic heritage.

Conclusion

The Villa Farnesina is truly spectacular but, as long as restorations are ongoing, the experience is really incomplete - even leaving aside the problem of the ticket price. So, you should double check the status at the entrance. If you are in Trastevere and have an inclination for Renaissance paintings, we would still recommend a visit.
